What Is an ADHD Evaluation?

An Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) evaluation is a comprehensive psychological assessment designed to determine whether an individual meets diagnostic criteria for ADHD and its specific presentation (inattentive, hyperactive-impulsive, or combined).

ADHD evaluations examine patterns of attention, impulsivity, hyperactivity, and executive functioning while also considering emotional, behavioral, academic, and environmental factors.

Because ADHD symptoms can overlap with learning differences and emotional concerns, evaluations are designed to provide diagnostic clarity and meaningful recommendations.

Who Is an ADHD Evaluation For?

ADHD evaluations may be helpful for:

Children & adolescents

struggling with attention, behavior, or academic performance

Young adults

seeking documentation for academic or testing accommodations

Adults

experiencing longstanding attention or executive functioning challenges affecting work or daily life

Individuals

referred by schools, physicians, therapists, or other providers for diagnostic clarity

Because ADHD often co-occurs with learning differences and emotional or executive functioning challenges, a comprehensive evaluation can help distinguish ADHD from other conditions and guide appropriate next steps.

What Is Included in the ADHD Evaluation?

ADHD evaluations use a multi-method approach tailored to the individual’s age and referral concerns. Components may include:

  • Comprehensive clinical and developmental interview

  • Assessment of ADHD-related behaviors and symptom patterns

  • Evaluation of ADHD subtypes

  • Assessment of emotional functioning and personality factors

  • Screening for co-occurring conditions such as Learning Disabilities, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, or Conduct Disorder, when appropriate

  • Review of academic, medical, and psychological records, when available

When a Neuropsychological Evaluation May Be Recommended

In some cases, attention difficulties may be part of a broader cognitive or neurological concern.

When ADHD symptoms are complex or accompanied by challenges related to memory, learning, processing speed, or executive functioning, a neuropsychological evaluation may be recommended to provide a more comprehensive understanding.

These evaluations allow for deeper clinical insight and help ensure that diagnoses and recommendations are accurate, appropriate, and well-supported.
